1980 Gateway to hell

This was going to be a background for a stop-motion animation project I was going to do in college but never got around to actually filming anything. Neat background, though. The gated arch was about 8 inches high and I did a pretty clumsy gouache painted backdrop behind everything. The stonework is made from styrofoam coated with stucco. The gate is made from popsicle sticks and the whole thing was sprayed with red-brown primer then weathered with charcoal and white chalk powder. It looked better in colour but this is the only image left from those days.
